The McLaren Sports Series: Mclaren’s attempt to compete with Porsche’s 911

With McLaren’s pledge to add a new vehicle to their lineup each year, 2015 is approaching quickly, and today, McLaren has launched a teaser campaign for their highly anticipated affordable model. This campaign, which was initiated by a teaser video, goes by the name of Black Swan. A Black Swan symbolizes something groundbreaking that “challenges beliefs,” and I believe that McLaren is referring to the new affordable model as being the black swan to their rivals’ white swans.

With that being said, the new affordable model has been named the Sports Series. This model is also being referred to as Project 13 or P13. McLaren has never been skilled in naming their models, but it still is more creative than the Ferrari La Ferrari. The Sports Series will feature a mid-mounted V8 engine and we expect it to produce around 350-500 horsepower. Forced induction has not been confirmed for the Sports Series. The more affordable McLaren will also have a carbon chassis similar to the chassis of the 650S . I’m expecting the model to feature tons of cutting edge gizmos inspired by McLaren’s participation in Formula 1.

Mike Flewitt, managing director of McLaren Automotive, insinuated in an interview with Top Gear that the Sports Series will be of a lower caliber than the 650S. Explicitly, he stated “If you saw the P13’s tub and the P11’s (12C and 650S), they are different but made on similar principles. Both are two-seaters, both mid-engined, but with different engines and suspensions. That’s how the 650S will justify its premium.” This differentiation between the models means that we should be expecting a car that is in a completely different category than any of McLaren’s previous projects.

The car is intended to rival Porsche’s 911 and Mercedes’ recently debuted AMG GT. The full premiere of the Sports Series is scheduled for late spring or early summer of 2015. But the real question is: will the Sports Series feature McLaren’s signature butterfly doors?
